Today we opened our All Weather Running Track. We began the morning with an assembly taken by Mrs Fellows, we talked about the reasons we wanted to install a track, the children discussed between themselves how far the thought the track was, the materials used to be environmentally friendly and that it can be used in all weather – which is great news with the cold weather lately.
We had Karen Briggs, MBE who is a British judoka, Karen won numerous World and European Championship medals in judo. She is considered one of the UK’s most successful competitive judoka. She represented Great Britain in the 1992 Summer Olympics, the first year Women’s Judo was included as an Olympic sport. We also had the Deputy Mayor of Hedon, Colin Billany and Mayoress who helped cut the ribbon and open the track to KS1 pupils. All KS1 pupils then took part in running 1 lap of the track, lead by Karen Briggs.
In the afternoon we had Taioalo ‘Junior’ Vaivai who is a United States international rugby league player who plays as a centre for Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League. Junior opened the All Weather Running Track for our KS2 pupils. Then lead them around the track for a few laps, he also stayed afterwards to answer questions and sign autographs.
