Old and New Toys at Hedon Museum with Y1

27 Nov 2025

Hedon Museum spent the afternoon with our Year 1 children on Monday.  They thoroughly exploring the activities and toys brought in by the museum.

Children sorted toys into past and present.  They discussed the look, purpose, function and materials each were made of and then attempted to place them within rough historical periods.

They also sorted the toys by what they were made of.  Children categorised them based on their primary material and then discussed why certain materials were commonly used.

Children were given the chance to play with and study old toys which they prioritised into different orders using key statements, such as “Which toy would you most like to take home?” or “Which toy do you think is the most expensive?”  They also sorted the toy from oldest to newest discussing how they know this.

Some of our funniest moments were of course exploring toys through play!  There were definite moments when us teachers felt very old and were reliving our childhood play times.

None of this would have been possible without Hedon Museum who provided the knowledge and the toys to help us explore the world of old and new toys.  We cannot thank Hedon Museum enough and we hope that the children will persuade their adults to spend some more time visiting the museum if they haven’t already been.
