Y3 Trip – Ancient Roman & Ancient Egyptian Experiences

23 Apr 2026

Year 3 visited the Hull and East Riding and Hands on History museums for their ancient Roman and ancient Egyptian experiences and learning activities.

Alongside the museum staff, we had the chance to handle, learn about and discuss real ancient Roman and replica artefacts and try on some soldier clothing and hold a shield (it was super heavy!!!).  For the budding future architects, artists and engineers among us we also built some arches which was quite tricky and made mosaics from real tile pieces (tessera).   After a tour of the other huge mosaics and other Roman artefacts and displays in the museum, we headed off to the agora (market place).  There we transformed into Roman shopkeepers and shoppers and did some shopping while trying to avoid the tax collector – that was really fun!

At the Hands on History museum, we experienced the wonders of the artefacts that the archaeologist, Howard Carter, and his team saw when they discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun, handled real and replica Egyptian artefacts and learnt about the real mummy displayed in the museum.  After we had great fun mummifying one of our friends and learning about mummification with the museum staff.

Unfortunately 3a had a bit of a camera malfunction during the day so weren’t able to take as many photos of the Egyptian experiences but there are plenty of 3b there to see what we all got up to.
